What Are the Everglades?

What are the Everglades? It has been called the largest flood plain in the United States. The area covers approximately half of Florida, stretching from Fort Lauderdale to Miami. It is named after a  natural body of water known as the Everglades. It is part of the National Parks System.

The Everglades is also known as a swamp. It is not a body of water; it is a natural channel built by the natural currents of the sea and the rivers. The land surrounding the channel has been developed to improve navigation and for industries. People visit the Everglades because of the natural beauty of the area. It is the home to many unique wildlife and its many attractions such as the Everglade Game reserve, the Suwannee River National Landmark, the Ozark Mountains and the Suwannee River drainage.

The area has a wide range of habitats including marshes, shrub lands, woods and wetlands. These areas have a variety of animal life such as bats, crocodiles, alligators, eels, frogs, salamanders and birds. There are some endangered species in these areas.

The Everglades is not only known for its natural beauty but for the tourism industry. Many tourists come every year to see this amazing place. There are hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and even cabins for rental. There are two known entrance points to the Everglades: the Suwannee River, where visitors can take a boat ride and go into the Everglades or the Fort Lauderdale International Airport where one can fly into Florida. However, driving into the Everglades is usually the preferred method.

People come to the Everglades to photograph animals and the wildlife. There are certain times in the year that the animals migrate from other areas and the wildlife is in abundance. This attracts people to photograph them. They also like to observe in the more remote areas.

One of the most well known parts of the Everglades is the Florida Keys. The Keys bring the tourists to this beautiful area. There are scuba diving sites, boating, snorkeling and charter fishing available in the Keys. The most popular dive sites are the South Fork Snake River and Key Biscayne Bay. These areas are known for their high quality of sea life. The waters are filled with tropical fish and other varieties.

The marine biology is another aspect of the Everglades that draws people to visit this area. It is the habitat of sea turtles. The animals are protected and there are certain seasons when you can see them. Some of the times are quite predictable such as the winter months. There are certain areas where the animals hibernate and you will see them come out again in the spring.

A tour of the Everglades is only limited by your imagination. The natural habitats and all of the creatures that call this area home are amazing. The waters are full of different types of fish and other interesting wildlife. There are so many things to do and see that you should be able to make an entire vacation out of it. A visit to the Everglades should be a once in a lifetime experience.

The Everglades has been inhabited since before recorded history. There are many legends and myths that have been told about this area. One of the most famous Everglade legends tells of the “Cursed Land”. This area known as the Everglades is thought to be the place where the curse of the Wild People was placed. This is the story that has brought tourists to this area for many years.

A visit to the Everglades is also known to help in getting rid of bad habits. If a visitor can overcome his fears, he can then roam freely around the Great Fairyland. Many animal lovers visit the Everglades to see the animal life. The fact that this land is one of the most visited tourist attractions makes it well worth seeing. You can even take tours of the jungle.

Tourists can enjoy many water activities while in the Everglades. This includes scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, fishing, and swimming. Another great thing about visiting this place is that it offers a glimpse into the ancient ways of the Native Americans. Their world history can be seen on display at various historical sites.

Many people visit Florida each year. Tourism is a huge industry in this part of the country. A visit to the Everglades can prove to be an enjoyable experience that will leave you with wonderful memories. In addition to this world-class attraction, the Everglades offers other things that will entertain you for a lifetime.
